Miss Kim Lilac

Description:
The Lilac' Miss Kim', Syringa patula 'Miss Kim', is a very popular shrub. It is thought by many to be the number one Lilac in the Midwestern United States. It has an abundance of fragrant blossoms in spring that are dark lavender-pink in bud and fade to a very soft lavender-pink when fully opened. This shrub is resistant to powdery mildew, but suffers under prolonged drought conditions, when it may drop many of its leaves. The Miss Kim Lilac makes a wonderful shrub for foundation plantings.

Barberry - Rosy Glow

Description:
The Barberry 'Rosy Glow', 'Berberis thunbergii', is an easy to grow shrub that is great for beginner gardeners. This barberry is a vigorous cultivar and is a showy garden plant with its variegated leaves of purple with light pink splotches. With a plant height of 3' and a spread of 2-3', it should be planted in full sun to part shade. Full sun will produce the best foliage color. 'Rosy Glow' needs a well drained area and can tolerate some drought. Yellow flowers will appear in April and they may last until May. Use 'Rosy Glow' as a back of the border plant with Daylily 'Stella De Oro' or Rudbeckia 'Goldstrum'.

Cotoneaster - Cranberry

Description:
The Cotoneaster Cranberry, 'Cotoneaster apiculatus', is a deciduous shrub that is easily grown in average, medium wet, well-drained soils in full sun. It has a wide tolerance of soil types.The branches may root where they touch the ground. This dense shrub displays stiffly arching branches. The small pink flowers appear in late spring and they will produce red cranberry-like berries in late summer. The autumn leaf color is very attractive with shades of purple, red and bronze. Use this plant to cover large areas, as a foundation plant, a low informal hedge or for erosion control on steep banks.

Cotoneaster - Peking

Description:
The Cotoneaster Peking, 'Cotoneaster acutifolia', is an erect shrub with slender spreading branches. The Peking Cotoneaster is best used as a hedge, or in groupings. This shrub displays yellow to red fall foliage and performs best in moist, well-drained soils. This shrub does well in partial shade to full sun light. Cotoneaster may be appreciated more for its dark green foliage than its blossoms. The small flowers are white to pinkish. Three-eighths inch black berries ripen in September and persist through mid-winter and are appreciated by some song birds such as the Robin and Catbird. Use this plant in the landscape for hedges, screens, and groupings.

Holly - Jim Dandy

Description:
The Holly Jim Dandy, 'Ilex verticillata 'Jim Daddy', and formerly called Early Male, is best known for its shiny evergreen foliage with red berries. It is a much hardier Holly than others in its family. Although it has separate male and female parts, only the female plants can produce berries. (Use Ilex 'Red Sprite' as a pollinator to produce berries). In the wild, 'Jim Daddy' is found in wet soils, but it will grow well in average soil conditions and will tolerate drought once established. With a plant height of 3-6' and a width of 4-5', it is a showy plant in any garden, and it makes a great border planting.

St Johns Wort - Sunburst

Description:
The St. John's Wort 'Sunburst', 'Hypernicum', also known as Golden St. John's Wort, has excellent yellow blooms that appear from June until July. St. John's Wort is easy to maintain and grow, preferring full sun to part shade in well drained soil. It will perform better in rich, sandy loams. It is tolerant of some drought but mulching the roots in the winter would be suggested. St. John's Wort is noted for its large golden yellow flowers and attractive blue green foliage. Growing 3-4' tall and wide, it is a native from Kentucky to North Carolina south to Georgia, Alabama and Texas where it typically occurs in rocky hills, limestone glades and barrens. Use this plant in shrub borders, hedges, foundations and planted in mass.

Willow - Japanese

Description:
The Japanese Willow, 'Salix Integra Flamingo', produces beautiful pink foliage all season long. The outer leaves turn a bright pink while the inner leaves are green and white. The Japanese Willow has 4 season interest. In the spring, before it leafs out, it produces hundreds of slender catkins that contrast brilliantly against the deep red stems. Then you see the pink summer foliage and in the fall and winter the striking red stems. You may prune the plant back for another flush of pink foliage later in the season. Regular pruning will promote a denser and bushier plant. Great as a container plant.

Adams Needle

Description:
The Adams Needle bush, Yucca filamentosa, has stiff evergreen rosettes and are part of the scene in hot dry Central and North American scrublands. Yuccas are hardier than they appear, and only fail in cold exposed inland positions, where they are better grown as container plants. This variety has a white edge. Yucca filamentosa makes dense clumps of stiff leaves 30 inches or so long and edged with fine curly hairs. The remarkable flower-spikes, 6' or more high, appear when plants are five or more years old.

Heavenly Bamboo

Description:
The Heavenly Bamboo, Nadina domestica, is not a true bamboo but a upright 6-8Ŭ high, semi-evergreen shrub that tends to slowly sucker at the base, forming colonies. When this plant is in full sun it usually assumes a reddish tint in winter (depending on environmental conditions). Careful pruning, as canes do not branch out and best to thin out old stems every year or head back old canes at varying lengths to produce a dense plant. Once established, they are very tough plants, thriving in sun, shade, moist or dry conditions.
